So you've decided to try your hand at the Internet. You've done some research, read a few books, looked through some articles and it looks like you might be able to make a reasonable part-time or even full-time living 'online'.

So you have built a website. Or maybe a few. And read about a thing called Affiliate Marketing. It all sounds incredible - almost too good to be true. Then you followed the expert advice of submitting the Sitemaps of your new sites to Google, played around with RSS maybe and focused on "quality content" so that other webmasters will 'naturally' link to you.

It's been several months and nothing's happening. Your new websites with plenty of Quality Content are welded to Page 17 of Google. Yahoo and Bing aren't bothered about your sites either.

You feel depressed, cheated and pi**ed off. Nothing's working and you're thinking about quitting this whole Internet Marketing caper. It's all lies, hype and ripoffs.

This is precisely where I was at in July 2008 - ready to quit.

Today, however, these are the kinds of results I get for my 40+ websites:

So what exactly changed?

Well, for one thing, I decided not to quit - neither should you - and I tried lots of different methods for getting my websites to rank well in Google.

But nothing worked.

Except one method: backlinking.

A backlink is a link on ANOTHER site to YOUR site and tells Google how relevant or worthwhile your website is for a particular term (called "Keyword" in Internet Marketing).

If you build enough backlinks to your site in SPECIFIC ways (I'll go into that more in a moment), Google will reward you with very high Search Engine rankings like mine.

Now normally, you will hear advice about backlinks like that you should approach different Webmasters in your niche and see if that will put a link on THEIR site to YOUR site. Or that if you have Quality Content, other sites will just naturally link to yours.

Here's the problem with those two approaches:

Webmasters are far, far too busy these days to even reply to link requests. Even if they did reply and did put a link to your site on theirs, you need many more links than these in order to rank well.

Let's take a look at the backlink volume in a niche where I have a paperback book under the pen-name "Steve Donovan" (Keyword: Photography Competitions); I am currently at #5 on Page 1 with 13 million+ competing relevant pages:

Now, we shouldn't confuse the number of REPORTED backlinks with the ACTUAL number of backlinks a site has. On average, in my experience, only about 20-30% of a site's actual backlinks show up with these tools. I am aware of the approximate number of backlinks that I have built to this page and it is considerably higher than 420 backlinks.

However, because I have configured and used my backlinks to my Amazon Sales Page in a particular way, I am competing on Page 1 with only a fraction of the backlinks of these other sites.

You can see how it isn't just backlink volume, which you do need, but HOW exactly you use your backlinks to make the most of them.

So by now, hopefully you can see that you need backlinks to help your site rank on Page 1 but you ALSO need to use them in a very SPECIFIC way.

With your currently failing or only partly-succeeding websites, the key thing to remember is that when it comes to Google Organic Search Results (the 'free' ones - apart from the time and effort invested to rank), it is NOT that backlink building is ONE method for improving your rankings, it is the ONLY method.

I'm not suggesting that backlinking is the only way to make a living online - in fact there are many methods. But if you want to rank in Google Organic Results, backlinking is all you have.

Here's what Matt Cutts, head of Google's Search Engine Quality Team says on the issue:

"The authority (rank) of a website is not
determined by age or number of
pages but by the number of links
coming into that site..."

The bottom line is that Quality Content does simply NOT attract backlinks, at least not in the volume you need to rank well on Page 1 of Google.

I visit amazing sites pretty often but almost never link to them. Neither do other people online. And believe me, there are a lot of lame junk sites at #1 on Google for their Keyword making money. Seems they're ignoring the whole 'quality content naturally attracts links' myth too.

Now I am NOT suggesting to create low-value, poor quality websites and then hope that they convert visitors into buyers. In fact, the sites that you have already created that aren't doing well in Google are probably pretty good - they just need traffic, traffic, traffic!

What I am saying is that RELYING just on good content to get traffic and high rankings does NOT work and will just de-motivate you when the traffic doesn't come.

"...So How Do I Find The Right Kind
of Backlinks For My Sites?"

By now, you could be wondering where and how to get these high-quality backlinks that will massively improve your search engine rankings. And how to use them.

Because you don't want just any kind of backlinks - you want high PageRank (Google's measure of site's authority from 0 to 10, 10 being the highest) backlinks which are "dofollow".

"Dofollow" means that the Webmaster of a site has allowed some PageRank and therefore backlink power to your site.

Many sites now use "nofollow" which means that the backlink is of very low value. For example, this picture shows how nofollow has been applied to many links on the LA Times homepage:

I have used a free tool called SEO for Firefox to show these nofollow (red boxes) backlinks which are of no real use for getting your sites to rank well.

Out of all the types of backlinks you can get, you need a particular type of high PageRank site where you can put your links and they will usually remain stable.

The reason that backlinking works so well - when done properly - is that simulates the illusion of a real authority site or viral article becoming more and more popular on the Web.

This is the whole basis upon which Google was built - determining the relevance and popularity of a site based on its online 'friends'. Like the real world where the social status of your friends rubs off on you, Google judges your site by who connects (backlinks) to it on the Internet.
